The final word

The Creative Commons concept is rooted firmly in standard copyright law rather than in unproven, unfamiliar new concepts, which means there should be no fundamental risk involved with putting it into practise.

It makes it easy for copyright holders to declare up front what kinds of use they'll allow, and it makes it easy for everyone else to know what they can and can't do with whatever content they're considering. Creative Commons doesn't change a single letter of the law, but it remains one of the biggest things to happen to intellectual property thinking since modern copyright legislation was established.
